“I lost over 22kg in six months!”
After having her baby girl, Susannah Gattellaro made the decision to shed the “baby weight” and compete. Just six months later she stepped on stage and won her division. Hear her story.

Let me start by saying this is really nerve-wracking.
I'm Suzi and my husband and I own AWA Supplements, a supplement store in Geelong, just outside Melbourne. Most people who know me know that I am a little social-media shy. I'm not one to post pictures or talk about my life for everyone to see.
Last year our lives changed forever. Our beautiful little girl Allira came into the world on April 1, 2015. I never knew it was possible to love something so much in an instant. She truly is our little piece of perfection.
Being pregnant was one of the most amazing and scary experiences of my life! Luckily, I had a really good pregnancy with no symptoms, so for me personally, it was great and made life more manageable. Watching my tummy get bigger while our little angel was growing inside of me was incredible.
However, watching my butt, boobs and everything else grow was another story. While I didn't take on the method of 'eating for two', it was just how my body adjusted to the pregnancy. I always ate healthy and exercised regularly but would still get bigger in all the wrong places. I ended up gaining over 22kg by the end of my pregnancy!
Now, for someone like me, who has always had issues with body image, this was one of the hardest things I had to adjust to. Not to mention, with our business being in the fitness industry where it's all based on how you look, the weight gain wasn't easy to deal with both physically and emotionally.
As an incentive to get my pre-baby body back, I decided to compete in my first ever bikini competition on October 4, 2015 – six months after giving birth. Although this could be considered crazy, I felt it was my opportunity to prove to myself and others that just because your body has gone through major changes - whether it be having a baby or gaining weight - that with clean eating, hard work and dedication, you can bounce back and be in the best shape of your life.
I won Ms Bikini Over 30 Victoria and then went on to compete at the nationals where I won Ms Supermodel Australia. Losing over 22kg in five months was hard, especially with an infant, but seeing where I have taken my body from, to what it is today, makes it so worth it.
Now at 31, I feel a lot younger both mentally and physically than what I did at 18! Changing my outlook on life and food has allowed me to have more energy and more focus.
The main motivation for me through it all has been my daughter. I want to be a good role model for her, to show her that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. I want to be able to have the energy to play with her and be around for her.
The biggest lesson I have learnt through it all is that you can’t get results with just exercise; your diet has to be on point also. As my husband says “why put a turbo on a car if you’re going to use cheap petrol?” It’s the same with your body: you can’t get the results you want with just exercise - you need the right foods to fuel it.
Now that I have achieved what I wanted from competitions, the only trophy for me is being a wife and mummy. As for fitness, I will continue to focus on being a better version of me every day. I have a ‘before’ photo of me on my fridge which is a reminder of where I have come from. This is my journey and the only competition I have is with myself.
SUZI’S DIET PLAN
Mea1 1: 1/2 cup oats with a scoop WPC protein powder and a sprinkle of cinnamon
Meal 2: 75g grilled chicken with 100g sweet potato
Meal 3: 150g grilled chicken, 100g sweet potato and a small handful of almonds
Meal 4: 75g chicken with steamed green veggies
Meal 5: 100g steak with ½ cup steamed green veggies
“Some nights I get sugar cravings, so I have two scoops of protein powder with a little water and I mix it so it is a cake-batter consistency. I then put it in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Instant ice-cream – the perfect guilt-free dessert!”
