Want to lose the jiggle without spending time at the gym? While some people are perfectly happy sweating it out, others need slim-down options that are a little outside the box. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to lose weight and tone up that don’t involve treadmills, weight benches or high-tech equipment that you need a manual to operate.
#1 - Just move more!
We are a society of sitters. If we’re not sitting behind a desk at work, we’re crashing out on the couch at home (Netflix and chill, anyone?). It’s this sedentary lifestyle that is slowly killing is. We have plenty of opportunities during the day to move a little more and these stolen moments add up. Why not try a few of these sneaky exercises:
- Next time you’re waiting for the kettle to boil, do some old-school star jumps.
- At lunchtime, head outside instead of eating at your desk. If you’re going out for lunch, choose a place that is 5 minutes farther than your usual.
- Catch the bus to work? Hop off a stop or two from your usual stop.
- Take the stairs instead of the lift.
- Take a 15-minute power walk around the block at lunch time.
#2 - Get enough sleep
It doesn’t matter if your workout and diet are dialled in – if you’re not getting enough sleep, you are less likely to lose weight. A recent study found that when participants had less than 7 hours of sleep a night they achieved 55 per cent less fat loss.
The domino effect of not getting enough sleep is that when you’re sleep deprived you’re more inclined to snack on things you shouldn’t. Experts say that our decision-making processes when sleep deprived are very similar to those when drunk, which could mean bad news for our diets.
#3 - Workout apps
You don’t need a gym to look more toned. If you have a smartphone, you’re all set. There are plenty of apps available that will get you sweating in no time, but here are 7 of the best:
#4 - Work on your gut health
There has been a lot of talk in recent years about the role of the gut flora in weight loss. Granted, it’s not the sexiest of topics, but the more than 30 trillion bacterial cells at work within the body help to regulate inflammation, digest food and produce chemicals that tell our bodies that we are full. When your gut flora are out of balance, your digestive system is likely to be too. So what’s the solution?
- Start by ditching alcohol and sugar – these feed bad bacteria.
- Try to eat more fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi and yoghurt daily.
- Aim to eat more prebiotic-rich foods like asparagus, bananas, broccoli, cabbage, fennel, garlic, honey, kiwi, leeks and pomegranate.
#5 - Escape the indoors
A great way of getting good-quality exercise is by doing things you don’t immediately associate with a workout. Some ideas include:
- stand-up paddleboard;
- bike riding;
- beach volleyball.
Don’t underestimate the other benefits of working out in the great outdoors. Being out in the open air helps your mood and your connection with other people, and it also boosts your Vitamin D levels, which are essential for good health.
#6 - Toning creams
If you want to tone certain areas of the body, try a slimming cream. Alpha Keri, one of Australia’s most trusted skincare brands, have developed a range of treatments that aim to help slim, shape and reduce pesky fat accumulation around the waist, tummy, hips and thighs. #7 - Dance your way to weight loss

These dance inspired workouts are a great way to tone and shape plus sure to boost your mood. All you need is your rhythm and dancing shoes. A word of warning though: be prepared to sweat!
