My weight-loss goals weren’t originally driven by the opportunity to become a fitness model. The chance to become healthy and in complete control of my life has always been the biggest incentive.
From 14-17 years old I was a relatively fit and healthy teenager, a member of my local gym and a dancer. At the age of 18 things drastically changed! Drinking and partying became a priority, anywhere from four to seven nights a week. Binge drinking lead to binge eating and the wheels fell off from there! At age 18 I entered the world of hospitality and began working in hotels. Those of you who have worked in this industry can understand the lifestyle of working around the clock, irregular sleeping patterns and regular fast food consumption. It is an industry synonymous with mid-week drinking sessions. My weight-loss goals weren’t originally driven by the opportunity to become a fitness model. The chance to become healthy and in complete control of my life has always been the biggest incentive. At the time this was a lot of fun and I had yet to notice the toll it was taking on my body! I went from weighing 67kg to almost 89kg in just 12 months!
I constantly felt sick, had throat infections, glandular fever and sinus infections - you name it and I had it! The fact I was constantly sick meant I took almost 30 courses of antibiotics in just two years! My parents began to notice changes in my behaviour at home and in my weight. After coming home one night so drunk that I passed out in the shower, my parents decided enough was enough and it was time to talk! As hard as it must have been telling their 20-yearold daughter she was an overweight alcoholic, it was the wake-up call I needed! I already had a trip to Europe booked for three months and decided upon my return I would make some big changes… and that’s exactly what I did.
When I returned in September 2012, it was time to write down some goals. I set out to be in complete control of my body and in the best shape of my life at 21 years old. I wanted to show my sister and parents that I could stick to something for once in my life, and to prove to everyone around me that I was more than just a “fun, party girl”! Before meeting my personal trainer I had tried every “weight-loss gimmick” in my attempt to lose weight. NONE of these worked long-term or were healthy! I tried “skinny teas”, weight-loss shakes, no-carb diets, juicing, and even carb-blocker tablets to try to shed the kilos. A few of them worked short-term, but the weight came back on as fast as I lost it. Training-wise I was doing up to five Body attack classes in a week, but little did I know how much damage I was doing to my metabolism or my joints! I soon realised I needed a diet plan that I could easily stick to and maintain long-term. I also needed a manageable training program that didn’t require so much cardio. I wanted to enter the world of weight training, but I found this very intimidating as a girl. I was unsure of the correct training techniques or how to target specific muscle groups.

My goals became achievable the day I met my personal trainer, Christine Ray. Christine is the inspirational owner of Rayzor Fitness and Rayzor Nutrition. I had seen her around the gym for many years and decided she was the perfect trainer for me. I’d seen the amazing physical transformations of so many girls my age who she’d trained.
I explained my story to Christine, who agreed that everything I wanted was more than achievable - but I had to A) give up drinking, B) stick to a diet plan specifically tailored to me, and C) stick to the training program. I’d never been so determined to do anything before so I agreed to all of it. I gave up drinking, I stuck to my diet plan and persisted with the training. As I started at the end of the year, I had to persist with my regime through the whole holiday period. The diet wasn’t a crazy no-carb diet; it was a diet that involved carbs, dairy, nuts, protein and even a cheat meal once a week. Christine tailored a diet plan that I could stick to, that I enjoyed, and one that made me feel great - it was more of a lifestyle change than a diet! The feeling of being healthy with no hangover was one I was fast to fall in love with!
Christine took me on in November 2012, agreeing to be part of the greatest journey of my life so far! In February 2013 I weighed in at 62kg, down from 80kg. I had achieved everything I ever dreamed of and more! My family were proud of me, my friends still loved being around me and they started getting involved in my new “fit and healthy” lifestyle. They saw the results I was achieving and most importantly, I was 100% in control of my body.
At the end of February it was time to set new health and fitness goals - it was time to see what my new body was capable of! I had started becoming interested in the fitness modelling industry. After doing some research into what I thought “comp prep” was going to involve, I was very wary of how strict the diet was going to be and how much extra training I was going to need to take on.

Many comp prep diets involved many hours of cardio, as well as almost completely eliminating carbohydrates. I started talking to a girl Christine was already prepping for comp and soon discovered that Christine’s comp prep diet was in fact very similar to my weight loss diet! It included all
the important macronutrients. In fact, my calorie intake went up along with my carbohydrate intake! My cardio decreased and my weight training changed to slightly heavier weights. However, I had to become more organised to buy fresh food, prepare all my meals (stir fry and steam my vegetables and my protein – fish, chicken or lean meat) and have it all ready and stored in containers to take with me for my day. I also had to go to bed very early (a necessity for vigorous training), as I train before work, then take all my food with me for an eight-hour day in a city office.

It can be difficult at family gatherings and celebrations when I am training, as everyone is eating lots of food. I am not very nice when they eat chocolate or cake in front of me, but it’s my choice and my mental determination has brought me a long way. My social life is limited, but my true friends are very supportive of me and many have become involved with boot camp! In only 10 short weeks, with Christine’s guidance, I stepped on stage at 14% body fat. Stripping down from 80kg six months prior to achieve this result was the biggest achievement of my life. I have completely fallen in love with the fitness and health industry and hope to soon enter in and begin my career.
